Representatives of the union and the management met over workers’ demand for a 150 per cent salary increase but the management offered only a 10 per cent rise, which the union rejected.
An official of the union who pleaded anonymity, told NAN that both parties will meet again on Aug. 6.
“We could not reach an agreement, so the management will meet on July 30 to work out a new salary scheme for the workers and they will now meet with us (NUEE) in two weeks,” he said.
The official said the union asked for a 150 per cent salary increase because “we are no longer under the normal civil service structure’’.
He said the high wage demand will not jeopardise efforts to meet the government’s target of generating 6,000 MW by December because “the union is also working to achieve the objective and we are committed to it”.
The meeting which began around at about 2 p.m., lasted seven hours.
NAN recalls that the workers had embarked on a ‘work to rule’ action on July 10 following management’s failure to meet workers’ demand for higher wages. (NAN)
