At least, 2000 former workers of the defunct Nigeria Airways have received payment alert of the 50 per cent of their pension approved by the Federal Government, a former Managing Director of the airline and former President, African Airline Association, Capt. Jonathan Baba Ibrahim has disclosed.
He praised the government of President Muhammadu Buhari for fulfilling his promise to pay the retirees of the national carrier whom he said were dying.
He spoke yesterday on the sideline of the 5th stakeholders’ forum convened by the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika in Abuja.
The Federal Government had approved N22bn being 50 per cent part payment of the N45bn for the payment of the pension.
A verification exercise which held in Lagos, Abuja and Enugu had been concluded a fortnight ago while the affected pensioners have started receiving payment alert.
The 72-year old Capt. Ibrahim who confirmed getting his alert too, added that so many others have equally received theirs.
“We were dying, we were suffering since 2002. I have got my alert two days ago and so many others. About 2000 now have got their alert,” he said.
