The first private-owned university in Gombe, Pen Resource University (PRU), has said it will introduce a scholarship scheme for students from indigent families.
The pro-chancellor and chairman of the governing council, Dr Sani Jauro, disclosed this at the weekend during the second matriculation ceremony of the university.
He said as a part of the town and gown relationship with the host community, PRU will introduce the scholarship for brilliant students whose parents could not afford to sponsor their education at the institution.
The pro-chancellor added that in addition to the newly established Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, which runs Medical Laboratory Sciences, Nursing Science, and Public Health, the university will establish a faculty of medical and pharmaceutical sciences to help bridge the manpower gap in the health sector.

He also announced a salary increment of 25 per cent and 35 per cent to junior and senior staff of the university, respectively, to ease the current economic hardship and also improve their performance.
Earlier, the acting Vice Chancellor of PRU, Professor Yahaya Amuda Yusuph, said a total of 334 new students are being matriculated, which brings their total number to 696.
He disclosed that the university has introduced eight new academic programmes, bringing the total number of programmes run in the university to 27, in the four faculties of Science and Computing, Law; Communications, Management, and Social Sciences and Faculty of Allied Health Sciences.
