Peace Corps wins suit against Police

Ambassador Dickson Akoh gave the commendation yesterday while reacting to the judgment delivered in favor of the Corps by a Federal High Court in Uyo.
He said this was the 6th victory won by the Corps against the Police. According to him, the refusal of the Police to obey the court judgments was indications that the Force was mockery of the rule of law.
A Federal High Court sitting in Uyo had declared that the invasion of the State Office of the Peace Corps of Nigeria in AkwaIbom State by the Police in October last year was illegal and unconstitutional.
Delivering judgment in a suit instituted by the Peace Corps of Nigeria against the Police, the Court held that it is unacceptable and amounts to gross impunity for the Police to have arbitrarily invaded the Peace Corps office without recourse to the rule of law.
In granting the reliefs sought by the Peace Corps, the trial judge, Justice Ojukwu granted an order of perpetual injunction restraining the Police from further arresting members of the Corps. The Court also ordered the Police to pay N2 million to the Peace Corps as damages incurred.
