The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State has lamented over the postponement of the rescheduled local government elections in Zangon Kataf and Birnin Gwari.
The rescheduled election was supposed to hold across four Local Government Areas on September 25, 2021.
But the Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission (KADSIECOM) announced the postponement on the eve of the rescheduled council polls.
The Chairman of KADSIECOM, Mrs. Saratu Dikko-Audu, explained that the exercise had to be cancelled in the two areas for security reasons.
She, however, said chairmanship and councillorship elections will be conducted in Chikun and Kajuru Local Government Areas on September 25, as earlier announced.
But PDP State Publicity Secretary, Abraham Alberah Catoh, accused SIECOM of engaging in the staggered elections in connivance with the APC so as to give the ruling party undue advantage to subdue the opposition parties during the elections.
According to him, “As much as the PDP appreciates the efforts of security agencies in curbing insecurity across the state, using the issue of insecurity to further postpone elections in these two Local Governments, even when elections were successfully conducted in 19 Local Governments Areas, without any security breach is unacceptable.
“Therefore, it is most unfortunate that the State Independent Electoral Commission, KAD-SIECOM, has once again postponed the 25th September, 2021, Local Government Elections in 2 Local Government Areas i.e Zangon Kataf and Birnin Gwari.
“It is obvious that the SIECOM is engaged in this staggered elections in connivance with the APC so as to give the ruling Party undue advantage to subdue the opposition Parties.”
He urged the commission to come clean in its responsibility of conducting free, fair and credible elections by giving a level playing ground to all political parties.
The council elections, which held on September 4, could not take place in Birnin Gwari, Zangon Kataf, Chikun and Kajuru Local Government Areas due to security challenges.
