Partial compliance as NERC reduces electricity tariff

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Authority (NERC) has announced the downward review of electricity tariff for Band A customers from N225 kilowatt hour to N206 kilowatt.

In a statement yesterday, NERC said the review was due to changes in the macroeconomic parameters in the country over the preceding month of April 2024 and especially the appreciation of exchange rates.

It added that a revised tariff order covering the month of May 2024 has been issued by the commission to the 11 Electricity Distribution Companies.

Recall that NERC in April approved an upward review for Band A customers from N68 to N266, a move it called service reflective price to improve liquidity in the electricity sector.

The increase made it mandatory for the Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to ensure customers under the band get at least 20 hours of power supply daily.

However, a check on the social media handles of the DisCos showed some are yet to notify their customers of the changes in tariff.

The check shows those that are yet to update their customers include Enugu Electric, Yola, Benin, Jos and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Companies.

On the other hand, Abuja, Ikeja, Eko, Port Harcourt, Kano and Kaduna Electricity Distribution Companies have notified their customers of the new changes.

It was also observed that the companies are finding it difficult to supply the minimum of 20 hours of electricity to the entire Band A feeders in their areas as they continue to apologise to the customers for not meeting up with the minimum hours of electricity as directed by NERC.
