Parents, teachers told to encourage reading culture among children

Parents and teachers have been told to support efforts by the National Library in reviving the reading culture among children. 

The National Librarian, Professor Chinwe Veronica Anunobi, made the appeal in Jalingo at the  annual  National Readership promotion campaign. 

She explained that the federal government was concerned over the absence of reading culture among children especially in primary and secondary schools.

Anunobi stated that the federal government through the National Library introduced the annual  national readership promotion campaign in all the states and federal capital territory to encourage and revive reading culture among Nigerians. 

“The objectives of the campaign are to encourage and revive the reading culture by way of promoting the availability of good reading materials,” she said. 

The Head of National Library in Taraba State, Mr. Yusuf  Jimoh Yakubu,said the focus of this year’s readership promotion campaign was to sustain awareness on the importance of reading culture created by previous campaigns through improved and continued advocacy. 

Yakubu said the campaign  was also to promote reading beyond just utilisation and examination purpose. 

He urged parents and teachers to join hands with National Library to  encourage their children to imbibe the reading culture.
