Parents of slain Kwara student call for justice as CP visits family

The parents of late Abdulyekeen Bamidele, a student of the Kwara State Polytechnic, shot by some policemen, have called for justice and open trial of the suspects.

The call came in the wake of a condolence visit by the state’s Commissioner of Police (CP), Victor Olaiya, to the family.

The father, Mr Bamidele, an electrician, told City & Crime that the family of the culprit visited him and were received at the house of the “magaji” to prevent any trouble.

He said, “I told them the issue is now beyond me as the government has taken it over. He was my first child and would have been 21 years old next month.

“I convinced him to study electrical/engineering to be grounded in this profession. Because of my children I have not been able to complete my house, but his life and my expectations were cut short by these officers.

“My son would have made it if he got help on time. It was after two hours that a Good Samaritan took him to the hospital. It was when he opened his eyes that he gave them my brother’s number before I was contacted. But I leave everything for God.”

On her part, the mother, Mrs Ramat Bamidele, said the officers involved should be tried openly rather than in secret.

She said, “Where am I going to start from, is it the money we have spent on him or the years it took him to get here? We were looking up to him but….”

Meanwhile, Mr Olaiya expressed gratitude for their cooperation during the investigation and delivered the IG’s assurance that justice would be served.

“The parents expressed appreciation to the IG and the Kwara State Police Command for their continuous support. They reiterated they were hopeful that the ongoing investigation would lead to justice for their late child,” a statement on Wednesday by the command’s spokesman, Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, read in part.
