A section of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) old terminal, Lagos, has been gutted by fire.
It was learnt that the incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday following a spark from an electric cable.
The old terminal of the MMIA built over 40 years ago was the same terminal which the Minister of Aviation, Mr. Festus Keyamo announced would be shut down by the end of the month.
The cause of the fire incident could not be ascertained immediately, but it was said to have been put out by the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire-fighting Service (ARFFS) officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
A message sent to our correspondent by an airport official titled, Fire Outbreak at MMIA, read, “All hell broke loose this morning as a huge inferno was sighted at the MMIA which was said to have erupted through a faulty cable at the Tarmac.
“All passengers/staff were asked to evacuate the building while the Lagos State Fire Service was on hand to complement that of FAAN..we thank these professionals for their swift response…”
No official commment from FAAN yet.
