Man nabbed 2 years after defrauding widow

A middle-aged man who allegedly defrauded a widow to the tune of N600,000 in Dutse, Abuja, two years ago has been arrested by the police.

The suspect, identified as Kelvin, was said to have collected the amount of money from the victim under the pretext to procure a Toyota Siena vehicle for her.

City News gathered that the victim who had wanted to buy a car which she will use in taking her kids to and fro school, was introduced to the suspected fraudster by a friend.

A source who spoke with our reporter said the victim was initially skeptical about dealing with the suspect, who claimed to be a car dealer but later became convinced after she saw a vehicle which both the friend and the suspect said was brought for her.

“Though the man insisted that she should pay N1 million naira for the Siena she preferred, she hurriedly paid in the sum of N600,000 to his bank account, promising to pay the balance later” the source said.

The source added that the victim who expected that the vehicle will be delivered to her in less than a month could neither see the car nor the suspect two years after.

“It was after several failed attempts to reach the man through the friend that it became obvious to her that she had been duped” the source added.

City News however learnt that the suspect, who was alleged to have defrauded other persons, was tracked down on Tuesday in Badagary, Lagos State and subsequently arrested by the police.

In a related case, a 26-year-old man was also arrested by the police for allegedly robbing a trader in a market in the same area.

The victim, who deals with baby wears, was said to have been robbed of the sum of N80,000 while attending to the suspect who claimed to be a staff of a telecommunication firm.

City News learnt that the suspect had entered the victim’s shop with his accomplice with a form which they requested her to fill for a special promotion offer.

The source said she was still busy filling the forms when the suspect’s accomplice quietly took the purse on top of the table and walked away.

“When she raised her head and discovered that her purse was no longer where she had kept it, she held the man and alerted other traders” the source said.

City News gathered that the suspect was about to be lynched by the traders before he was rescued by the police.

Confirming both incidents, the Dutsen Alhaji Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Aisha Yusuf said the suspects would soon be charged to court.

Man sustains burns rescuing properties in fire outbreak

A 40-year-old man sustained severe burns while rescuing properties from a neighbour’s apartment which was engulfed by fire in Ushafa, Bwari, Abuja.

City News gathered that the owner of the house was away when his apartment went into flames.

A witness said the victim was alerted by one of the female tenants who was overwhelmed by the fire which emanated from the kitchen section.

The witness said the victim had succeeded in rescuing some of the properties and went back the second time when he was engulfed by the inferno.

“He was on a second rescue mission when the fire started burning his clothes and then his body. The fire affected half part of his body” he added.

City News learnt that it took the intervention of other passers-by to quench the fire and rescue the victim before he was rushed to the Kubwa General Hospital

When contacted, the head, Accident and Emergency unit, Paul Olise, said the victim was brought to the hospital with burns, adding that he is receiving treatment at the male surgical ward of the hospital.

The chairmanship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), in the April 9, 2016 council election in Kwali Area Council, Mr. Danlami Saleh Yebu, has said if elected he will execute people oriented projects.

Yebu, who spoke during an interview with our reporter yesterday said there are a lot of projects that are uncompleted and promised that he will complete them when he assumes office.

He noted that most of the uncompleted projects are people oriented citing rural electrification projects at Ijah and Tungan-Sarki villages as examples of projects he will give priority if elected chairman of the council.

He also said that since perennial water scarcity and bad road network have always been the major problems facing people of the rural areas, his administration will ensure that boreholes are sunk in all the rural communities and roads a graded across such communities to enable farmers transport their crops to the market.

The chairmanship candidate added his administration will explore avenues to generate more revenue for the council in order to meet all its financial obligations.

Yebu also said he almost lost hope when INEC did not publish his name among candidates to participate in the area councils election. He however said now that he has got redress from the court he was determined to win so that he can govern his people with justice and fairness.

He thanked the judiciary for playing an important role in sustaining democracy.

“The ruling of the court has really proved that the judiciary is for the common man and also the INEC to have allowed all the political parties to exercise their rights, which is the beauty of democracy. And I thank God for the judgment, ‘’ he said.

He also said the postponement of the council election will give him and his supporters more ground to re-strategize, through embarking on vigorous campaign across the ten wards of the council, saying he is confident that he will emerge victorious.
