Glo leads in data network again

Globacom has again maintained its lead in new internet subscriber acquisition for the month of February, 2016.

According to a recent data report released by the telecoms industry regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Globacom gained 248, 593 new internet subscribers while many other players in the industry lost internet subscribers in the month of February.

The report revealed that Globacom increased its data subscribers from 25, 436, 244 in January to 25,684,837 in February 2016. Airtel trailed behind, moving its data subscribers from 16,855,609 to 17,079,646 with a gain of 224, 037 subscribers in the same period.

Etisalat shed 52,251 internet subscribers in the month under review moving from a total of 15,283,903 in January to 15,231,652 in February.

The worst hit was MTN which lost 2,614,489 million internet subscribers in February. The network which had 38,218,859 million internet subscribers in the month of January was depleted to 35,604,370 in February.

The telecommunications industry generally lost a total of 2,194,110 internet subscribers. As at February 2016, a total number of 93.75 million internet subscribers remained on all the networks as against the 95.94 million subscribers that used the internet on all the networks in January.

Of the 93.75 million internet users recorded in February 2016, 93.6 million browsed on GSM networks, while Multi-Links and Visafone pulled 150,125 users on the CDMA network.

Visafone maintained 149,953 customers surfing the internet in February. Multi-Links on its part had 172 internet users in February, losing 52 customers from the January record of 224 users.

Globacom has been consistent in winning the most of all the new internet subscribers added by all the telecom operators since last year according to the monthly reports published on the website of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

In January Globacom led in new subscriber acquisition with a total of 354,178 subscribers joining its internet customer base. The figure represented 94.7 percent of the total number of 373,835 new internet customers acquired by all the four major operators in the country.

Globacom in the last one year added a total of 7, 251, 657 subscribers which is 53 percent of the total 13.644 million new customers of the four major operators. Etisalat placed a distant second with a total of 5,431,190 new internet customers, while Airtel finished third with 961,548 new data customers in the 12 months period.

A total of 1,059, 160 data subscribers left MTN, a number that outweighed those who joined the network in the same period.

Divisional Head, Electronic Banking, Adédèjì Olówè, explained that the new Fidelity Online app is not just an upgrade of the old but a new application with enhanced features that can be used with a range of mobile devices such as Apple, Samsung, Blackberry and other Android products. He disclosed that the app offers customers a simple, seamless and secure banking, adding that customers can bank, how and when they want to. “With Fidelity Online App, our bank is always open 24/7”.

The upgrade, Olówè insisted is significant considering the growing number of Nigerians moving from the banking halls to mobile phones or tabs to do their day-to-day banking transactions, adding that online financial services offer a stepping stone to financial inclusion. “We are meeting these demands with the Online Banking app in both form and function, with an important focus on the quality service delivered to customers”. He pointed out that the key feature of the app is the ease associated with registration. “Registration is a self-service process, not to mention the fact that customers can activate soft-token and set their transaction limit securely from the comfort of their homes or offices”.

Other features of the Fidelity Online App include: the ability to validate beneficiaries of cash transfers before a transfer is made; use of same username and password on both mobile and web; the increased number of billers that can be paid directly from Fidelity Online platform such as, utility bills, toll firms, Churches, Cable and internet subscriptions, amongst others.
