The former APC chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun has called on all political parties to in the interest of peace and territorial integrity of the nation ignore negative campaign tactics, in the buildup of the upcoming general elections.

Oyegun stated this on Thursday at the One-day public lecture and presentation of Nigeria’s National Compendium with the theme: “Elder Statesmen Reflection on Nigeria”, organized by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in collaboration with Bellmark Consulting Services.

Oyegun who said that the optics in the political environment is bad noted that the debate for choosing political office holders should be about who is best placed to give the country hope.

He said government is ignoring the people and urged political leaders to lead by example adding that unless something is done the country will pay a huge price.

He said the country was not addressing the issues that are hindering the country from greatness and urged the NOA to remind Nigerians to get their acts together stressing that every citizen irrespective of their religion, culture, or political affiliation have a part to play in the unity and peace of the nation.

“NOA needs to remind Nigerians that there are 190 million citizens in the country that must do their own bit in ensuring the country becomes great irrespective of their race, political affiliation, religion and cultural background. We have a singular responsibility to get our acts right” he said.

During his welcome address, the DG of NOA, Garba Abari said the compendium captures the more than 1000 years of Nigeria’s history in narratives and in pictures.

He said the compendium identified national icons, elder statesmen who have contributed immensely to the Nigeria adding that the event was for the invited elder statesmen to talk about their reflections on Nigeria especially during election period.

“The nature of the times, in less than 100 days from now the country is going into election; we are using this opportunity to use the elder statesmen to reflect peace. Peace is the way to go the country must not be seen to be tearing itself apart because of elections” he said.

Also speaking, former military Governor of Ondo State and elder statesman, Bode George said Nigeria needs to deepen its tolerance level and dismantle the politics of hate and bitterness.

He called on leaders to demonstrate unbiased leadership and protect the country’s territorial integrity stressing that the Nigeria’s strength is in its plurality.
