Owoseni to FG: Don’t rely only on technology to tackle insecurity

Fatai Owoseni, the Special Adviser on Security Matters to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has urged the federal government not to rely solely on technology to tackle the security challenges in the country.

Speaking during an interview on “2023: Year Of Transition,” a Channels TV’s special end-of-year programme, Owoseni, a former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, said there was a need for the recruitment of more police officers in the country.

He said: “Sometimes, it appears that we are over depending on technology. One very important thing in security and addressing security challenges is the human element and that is why in some other places, they talk of HUMIT – human intelligence.

“Even the United States of America with all the drones that they have, why are they building walls, physical walls if the drones and technology can do the whole thing? There must be the boots on the ground, it’s not just about technology.”

Owoseni, while speaking about the security situation in Plateau State, blamed the attacks on lack of intelligence by security agencies.

The North-Central state has experienced a string of attacks on villages since December 24 which has left over 200 dead and scores injured.

He said the attacks in Plateau should not be taken in isolation, adding that: “What has happened in Plateau showed clearly lack of intelligence.”

Owoseni said: “Why won’t that be that? You have all the security institutions, they don’t work together. They don’t see their roles as complementary, there is competition.

“We must probably redefine what our internal security architecture is. We talk of internal security architecture, who is taking the lead?”
