Over 69,500 pupils across 70 public primary schools in Lagos and Plateau States have been trained on promoting environmental education and sustainable practices, through the successful implementation of the Clean Our World project.
The Clean Our World project, initiated by Oando Foundation, in collaboration with Sumitomo Chemical, the Lagos and Plateau State Universal Basic Education Boards, and GreenHubAfrica, addresses Nigeria’s growing waste management challenges, particularly the annual generation of 32 million tonnes of solid waste, 2.5 million tonnes of which is plastic. By focusing on integrating environmental education into public schools and local communities, the initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4.7, which emphasises education for sustainable development and climate action.
At the project’s close-out ceremony in Lagos, Tonia Uduimoh, Programmes Manager at Oando Foundation, spoke about the initiative’s impact. “This project empowers young Nigerians to become climate champions by providing them with the knowledge and tools needed to tackle pressing environmental challenges such as plastic pollution and urban flooding. By fostering a culture of sustainability, we are shaping a generation equipped to make a difference.”
Building on the success of previous phases in Lagos, the initiative expanded to Plateau State this year, marking its first phase in the region.

Pupils in both states participated in activities focused on waste management, recycling, sanitation, and sustainable practices. Teachers were also provided with specialised training and instructional materials to effectively deliver environmental education and inspire their students.
Board Secretary of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Mr. Hakeem Lamidi, commended the Foundation for its efforts, stating, “The Clean Our World project aligns with our state’s goals for environmental sustainability. It has not only improved our environment but also inspired a generation of environmentally conscious learners. LASUBEB remains committed to supporting initiatives like this to foster a cleaner and greener future.”
Head Teacher of Awoyaya Nursery and Primary School, Okeshina Deborah, expressed her gratitude for the programme, saying, “This initiative has expanded our understanding of sustainability and provided income-generating opportunities through recycling. We deeply appreciate Oando Foundation’s dedication to building a sustainable future for our pupils and teachers.”
