The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has awarded educational intervention to five million adolescent girls and young females in Nigeria.
In a statement to mark the International Day of the Girl Child, the Head of Education Sector, UNESCO Abuja regional office, Mr Mamdou Lamine Sow, under the theme: “Our rights, Our lives, Our future”, said the five million Nigerian adolescent girls and young women received life-saving education, information and skills to make informed decisions about their sexual reproductive health and well-being, and to achieve their potential.

He also said that the program had raised awareness through advocacy and sensitization to duty bearers, built the capacity of teachers, developed resources to address school-related gender-based violence and integrated indicators to monitor progress in the Educational Management Information System (EMIS).
“Educating girls is one of the best investments any family, community and country can make as education is one of the most powerful routes to a better future. Education helps girls escape from the vicious cycle of poverty and into the virtuous cycle of development,” he said.
The program was launched in 2018 and has been implemented in the FCT, Taraba, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Cross River, Abia, Benue and Lagos states.
