At least 300 people were displaced following a heavy flood which wreaked havoc in Toto LGA of Nasarawa State.
City & Crime gathered that the flood was as a result of the torrential downpour which occurred between Sunday night and Monday afternoon, in which several houses, farm lands were submerged.
City & Crime reports that the worst affected areas include Anguwar Madugu, Anguwar Ohere and Anguwar Adagu within Toto metropolis.
Our reporter also observed that the flood caused erosion especially at Toto West LEA Primary School, as some residents waded into the flood with hoes to divert the overflowing water.
A resident of Anguwar Madugu, Abubakar Aliyu, while speaking when our reporter visited the scene on Monday, said his entire house was taken over by the flood.
He said he was inside his room when the heavy rain began and he rushed out to alert neighbors as the flood worsened.
He said, “Before I realized what was happening, the entire house was already flooded and I became confused as I had to quickly move my family out to a neighbor’s house.”
He said some of his neighbors’ houses built with mud blocks have collapsed as a result of the flood, adding that his property, worth thousands of naira was destroyed.
Aliyu, who said he thanked God that no life was lost to the flood, appealed to Nasarawa state government to come to his aid and other affected victims by providing relief materials to them.
Another victim, Alhaji Ibrahim Ali, whose house was also affected by the flood, said that viable property including household items, were destroyed by the flood.
He said his family has been completely sacked by the flood, which forced them to relocate to their neighbor’s house.
Reacting, the Vice Chairman of Toto LGA, Alhaji Mohammed Kwanakis, who spoke through Alhaji Aliyu Abdullahi Tashas, expressed sadness over the flood, which, he said, had affected many houses in the area.
He said the LGA chairman was not in town but he would inform him to see how the affected could be assisted.
