The city of Abuja is set to witness over 200 women golfers as the 25th IBB Ladies Open Golf championship teed off on Thursday at the IBB International Golf & Country Club, Abuja.
In a press conference before the tee-off, the Lady Captain, Mrs Folashade Olateju said that over “200 women golfers were coming from all over the globe, showcasing talent, dedication and passion for this great game of golf”.
The players are mostly from Nigeria, Uganda, Korea and Ghana.
She further said the competition is a celebration of women in sports.
“This tournament is not just an event on our calendar; it is a celebration of women in sports, a testament to the enduring spirit of competition, and a platform for camaraderie and friendship to flourish.

As we gather here, we honour the traditions of this remarkable sport while also embracing the advancements and inclusivity that have made golf a truly global phenomenon” she said.
Speaking further, Olateju urged the golfers to create memories and form bonds.
“As we embark on this journey over the next few days, let us remember the values that define the essence of golf – integrity, respect and perseverance. Let us compete fiercely yet gracefully, acknowledging that victory is not solely measured by scores but by the bonds forged and the memories created,” she said.
The Women Affair Minister, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye who officially teed off the tournament said she will be available anytime to promote women’s programmes.
“I am selfish and partial when it comes to women’s programmes,” she declared.
The Chairlady of the Organising Committee, Pastor Anne Abimiku while fielding questions said players will be ranked with the World Ranking system.
The three-day tournament which began yesterday is expected to come to a climax on Sunday where 45 best players will compete in the finals.
