More than 1,000 residents of Ojokoro local council development area in Lagos have benefited from a free medical outreach by Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH.
Chief Medical Director, LASUTH, Prof Adetokunbo Fabamwo, stated that the outreach was aimed at providing free medical consultations, free eye check for Cataract and glaucoma and free medical counselling, to showcase LASUTH’s contribution towards promoting the THEMES agenda of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu led government.
He said, “About 22 years ago, the then governor of Lagos state (Asiwaju Bola Tinubu) had the vision and foresight to start a medical school and teaching hospital in Lagos state. Since then, a lot of investment has been made into the manpower, infrastructure and equipment which informed our decision as a tertiary institution to showcase how we have been able to contribute towards the successful implementation of the THEMES agenda of the governor.”
Prof Fabamwo, who stated that the outreach was not funded by the government but sponsored by contractors, vendors and friends of LASUTH who donated towards the course, said free surgery would be carried out on those who required it.
“We want to screen them here, pick cases of glaucoma and cataract, and take them back to LASUTH for treatment and surgery free of charge. We feel that among these 1000 people, 10-15% of them will be taken back to LASUTH for further treatment,” he said.
65-year-old beneficiary of the outreach, Francis Adewale, from Osun state, stated that he heard of the outreach through a church announcement and decided to partake in it.
He said, “the medical check-up will be of great importance to me. They said the outreach is free and it is free as they stated. They didn’t ask for any token from us. We have benefited from this and it will help to reduce the problem of humanity.”
