There was outrage on Thursday in Ogun State as stray bullets allegedly fired by the operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) killed a young man at Oke-Odan, Yewa South Local government Area of the state.
Daily Trust reports that this brings to four deaths in series of clashes between customs officers and the daredevil smugglers in the state within two weeks.
It was gathered that pandemonium broke out yesterday when customs officers, while chasing a suspected car smuggler along Idiroko border road, shot sporadically, killing the yet-to-be-identified youth.
The incident, it was gathered, led to a riot as youths of Oke-Odan barricaded the international road, causing heavy gridlock.
The irate youths made bonfires on the road as they threatened to engage the customs officers, who were said to have fled the scene immediately the incident occurred.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the NCS, Ogun 1 Area Command, Hammed Oloyede, neither confirmed nor denied the killing.
When asked if he was aware of the incident, Oloyede simply said, “I had about the incident but I didn’t get the detailed information.”
