Our values, morals will be restored when we behave right—Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said for Nigeria’s values and morals to be restored, the leaders and the citizens have to work hand in hand to build trust amongst each other and behave right.

Speaking on the National Value Charter while he was a guest at Sunrise Daily on Channels Television, he said there was a huge erosion of values and morals as a nation which was making the people unpatriotic and immoral.

He lamented that it was important that Nigerians go back to the values the founding fathers set for the country in order to restore the glory of the country.

Idris noted that there was a breach of trust when politicians who got elected into office refused to protect and give back to the citizens who elected them, hence the citizens in turn dropped the values of the country and became unpatriotic.

He called on the leaders of the nation to treat the citizens with respect, justice and equality, saying when that is done and the citizens begin to get it right as well, that could help to stop the ‘japa’ syndrome.

He said the charter was for everyone as leaders and citizens would be held accountable for upholding the values and morals of the country.

Idris applauded the nation’s security agencies saying they have “been making sacrifices to ensure that we are safe. Even though we expect more, but they are doing a good job so far.”

According to him, for people to say that the security agencies were not doing anything to protect the citizens was unfair.

On the hardship in the nation, he said President Bola Tinubu anticipated the pain Nigerians would go through if the subsidy was removed but he also knows it would be worse if it was not removed.

According to him, an investigation was ongoing to ensure that all those involved in the subsidy crime were brought to book.

He said the government was doing its best to ensure that Nigerians do not feel the pains of the subsidy removal by the payment of N35,000 to civil servants and provision of buses for transportation amongst other palliatives.
