Our education sector needs better attention

Nigeria at 60 years of independence is still bedeviled with many challenges and difficulties in its social, economic, political and even developmental life.

This is manifested in the political instability; economic insolence, moral degradation, youth unemployment as well as infrastructural deficit in the country.

As a result, the nation seems to be lagging behind in the global developmental arena.

But due to the paradigm shift from material to knowledge economy internationally, education is the panacea for Nigeria’s developmental impediments.

The systems of education therefore should shift emphasis from stuffing the minds of youth with mere facts, theories and ideas to developing in them problem-solving abilities, critical thinking skills, deductive and inductive reasoning techniques.

These coupled with proficiency in information and communication technology (ICT), will enable them analyse our situation with an enlightened minds, proffer workable solutions and contribute immensely to the advancement of Nigeria.

This reform cannot be effected without positioning the teacher at his right place, with the right skills, knowledge, behaviours, attitudes and befitting welfare package.

As a dealer of hope, fountain of inspiration and a catalyst in human capital development, a teacher should be given proper attention and due consideration in the scheme of educational matters.
