Osun gov’ship: Supreme Court affirms Adeleke as PDP candidate

The Supreme Court has affirmed Osun State governor-elect, Senator Ademola Adeleke, as the authentic candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the July 16 governorship election.

A unanimous judgement by a five-member panel of justices led by Justice Amina Augie on Thursday held that the pre-election suit was statute-barred, having been filed outside the 14 days provided by law.

The apex court thus held that the appeal, brought by Prince Dotun Babayemi, who emerged from a parallel primary election held on March 8 by a faction of the PDP in the state, was incompetent.

Consequently, Babayemi’s counsel, Mr Adebayo Adelodun (SAN),  withdrew the appeal.

The Court of Appeal in Akure had on May 18 also refused Babayemi’s appeal against Adeleke, who was published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the candidate of the PDP.

Adeleke won the governorship election by polling 403,371 votes against 375,027 by Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
