Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has tasked the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) to synergize electronic data already obtained by other agencies of government to enhance technology driven policing in the country.
He spoke on Thursday at the inauguration of the Nigerian Police Crime and Incident Database at the Force Headquarters, in Abuja.
He said: “I want the police to collaborate with other databases like the Bank Verification Number, National Identity Management Commission, the Independent National Electoral Commission and others.”
“The police should work with a unified database; we are set for smart policing… crime and incident database is central to modern police investigations.” Vice President Osinbanjo added.
He also said the project would keep the police ahead of criminals in the country, noting that with technology the police could check the prevalence of high level crimes.
Earlier, in his remarks, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, said the Crime and Incident data base is to ensure accessibility to a one –stop database.
He said it is aimed at profiling criminal elements so as to change the crime data management system of the police.
He also said it is important the Nigerian Police keep- up with international best practices in the use of information communication technology, crime fighting tools.
He said: “The full implementation of this project will herald the full interaction between the zonal/state commands and other police formations/units across the country.”
“While also ensuring useful and accurate profiling of crime data information and discouragement of wastage in the payroll system of the force,” he added.
