Orphaned children paired with mentors after leaving care home

About 50 children due to age out of orphanage homes in Plateau State into the larger society, have each been paired with a mentor who is to serve as their life betterment coaches so that they can have a formidable future.

The event happened during the launching of the initiative by Kingdom Kids Klub tagged ‘Stand Out: Ageing Out Africa (AOA) Mentoring Network’.

The children who are from seven orphanages in the state, have also been cautioned against negative social vices, hence the allocations of mentors to each of them who would guide them in adopting acceptable behavioural and career paths.

Speaking at the event, the Global Coordinator for Kingdom Kids Klub, Sandra Chikan, said as the children transit from the orphanages into the larger society, they arranged for their mentors based on the result of a research they conducted.

She said the research revealed that some of the children stayed longer than necessary at the orphanage homes which is not supposed to be so.

“But as the children grow and reach 18 years and above, and are due to leave the orphanages, where do they go to and what happens to them? That is why we set up ‘Stand Out’ initiative so that they can find men or women who are already accomplished in life and doing something tangible to help mentor and train them in building relationships.

“So when the children leave the homes, they will be able to stand on their own and have something doing for themselves while contributing to the society and nation building,”

On her part, the Programme Manager of Kingdom Kids Klub, Sharon Osondu, said the programme is necessary because some of the kids, from 15 years and above, who should be ageing from the orphanages, are always afraid of leaving because the orphanage provided them a safe home.
