Ophthalmologist links 50% of road crashes to bad sight

The Chairman, Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria (OSN) in Ogun State, Dr Oladapo Awodein, has disclosed that 50 per cent of road accidents are due to bad sight.

He said this in Abeokuta at an event organised to mark this year’s World Sight Day.

At the event, the Ogun Primary Health Care Development Board (OGPHCDB) in conjunction with the State Committee on Eye Health (OGSCEH) conducted free eye screening for motorists and drivers in various parks and garages across the state.

Speaking on the theme for the year, “Love your Eye, Save Lives”, Awodein hinted that statistics have shown that 50 per cent of road accidents were due to bad sight, hence the target on drivers and motorists.

He said the screening exercise would avail them the opportunity to know their sight status, assuring that the programmes would be carried out simultaneously in parks and garages.
