Operators react as Keyamo suspends $300 helicopter landing levy

Operators have hailed the decision of the federal government to suspend the controversial $300 levy imposed on helicopter landing.

The decision to suspend the levy came after massive protests against the levy.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, yesterday announced the temporary suspension of the fee levied on helicopter operators.

Daily Trust Saturday reports that helicopter operators protested against the levy outsourced to a consultant, Messers NAEBI Dynamic Concept Limited.

Keyamo had earlier defended the levy inherited from his predecessor, Senator Hadi Sirika, but he bowed to pressure on Friday, announcing the suspension in a statement signed by Odutayo Oluseyi, the ministry’s spokesman.

He said further actions on the matter would be taken after a review committee submits its report for scrutiny.

Speaking with our correspondent yesterday, the chief executive officer of Aero Contractors, Captain Ado Sanusi, commended the government for the suspension, saying it shows the government is a listening one.

According to him, the levy would have affected the growth of general aviation, which helicopter operation falls into.
