Akwa Ibom elders, under the aegis of Akwa Ibom Leaders Vanguard, are demanding for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari over the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.
The group is also demanding that the National Assembly intervenes in the matter and ensure that the rule of law, as enshrined in the nation’s constitution on the matter, is defended.
Spokesperson of the group, Senator Anietie Okon said, on Sunday in Uyo, that the action of the President was deliberately designed to stir the country into crisis, adding that he was being misguided by a cabal that wants to plunge the nation into anarchy.
He demanded the immediate withdrawal of the suspension, which he said was designed to demean the status of Onnoghen, noting that the people of the Niger Delta region would resist the disgraceful act on their son.
He called on President Buhari to tender an unreserved apology to Justice Onnoghen, the judiciary and the entire citizens of the country for what he described as a misdemeanor.
According to Okon, the people of the South-South lays the golden eggs for the nation and deserves more respect and consideration in the scheme of things in the country.
He commended the international community for the interest shown in the happenings in the country and urged them to be more proactive in seeing to free and fair elections in the country, adding that they would resist any attempt to rig the forthcoming elections in the state and the country.
“That we condemn in strong terms, the perfidious and devious suspension of the honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen and call for an immediate withdrawal of the suspension.
“President Buhari’s continued availability to be used by this criminal gang is detrimental to the health of the country. The pressure of office is detrimental to the health of the President and his continued pretense is very detrimental to the health of the country and therefore we want him to resign.
“We are calling on the National Assembly to rise to the challenge of ensuring that the rule of the constitution and democratic order in the country is defended and restored,” he said.
