The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said only 54.6 per cent of the under five children’s births are registered in Kano compared to 57.3 at the national level.
The Chief UNICEF field office in Kano, Rahma Rihood Mohammed Farah, made this known during a media dialogue on birth registration and HPV orientation held in Kano in collaboration with the National Population Commission (NPC) and the National Orientation Agency (NOA).

He said birth registration must be taken as significant right which the Nigerian government gives to every child.
He pointed out that to ensure the birth of every child in Nigeria is registered; UNICEF is supporting the government to strengthen coverage of birth registration during immunisation services in health facilities and capturing children who are under one year of age as soon as they are born using digitalised processes.
He revealed that presently, the overall number of registered births in the country stands at 225,408,163 million as at October 2023.
