One month after gunmen invaded the main campus of Ahmadu Bello University and abducted Dr Ibrahim Bako, a lecturer with the Department of Physiology, the lecture has regained his freedom, Daily Trust gathered.

Gunmen invaded Bako’s home at Sardauna Crescent within the school’s complex on November 23rd and abducted him alongside his wife and daughter.

The Director, ABU’s Public Affairs Unit, Malam Awwal Umar had, in a statement, said the university security division had quickly informed the operatives of the Police intelligence response team that advanced to the scene following a distress call.

Awwal had said there was an exchange of fire between the kidnappers and the mobile police operatives, who chased after the kidnappers to Kasuwar Da’a village, which borders the university, where the kidnappers released Dr Bako’s wife and daughter but went away with the lecturer.

However, our correspondent gathered from sources that Bako was eventually released on Christmas eve after ransom was paid.

A source, who met Bako at the kidnapper’s camp and regained his freedom a week before the lecturer had told Daily Trust that after receiving N2million as ransom from Bako’s family, the kidnappers had demanded additional N8 million for his release.

When our correspondent placed a call to Dr. Bako’s phone, the wife answered and confirmed that her husband had been released on Thursday and was recuperating but did not speak about the ransom.

The university, through its Director, Public Affairs Unit, Malam Awwal Umar, also confirmed that the lecturer had been released.
