Witnesses have put the number of dead at 30, saying two other cars—a Camry and a Corolla—were also involved.
Police spokesman Tee-Leo Ikoro said only 10 were confirmed dead in the crash.
“As we speak now ten people have been confirmed dead in the accident and we can still have more because we still have many people trapped under the trailer,” Ikoro said.
About eight commercial motorcycles were crushed after the trailer loaded bags of ric lost its brakes.
Many of the women killed in the market were traders from neighbouring towns like Ikare and Oka, also in Akoko.
The eyewitness said the accident occurred at about 7.30pm
