Ondo poll: PDP, APC bicker over Sanwo-Olu’s appointment as campaign chair

Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), yesterday, asked the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to reject his appointment as chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Campaign Council for the October 10 governorship election in Ondo State.

Daily Trust reports that the APC, Tuesday, constituted a 104-member campaign council for the governorship election.

The committee is to be chaired by Governor Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, with Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong as deputy chairman, according to the APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena.

But Lagos PDP asked the governor to reject the appointment and face his business of governing the state.

The PDP Publicity Secretary, Taofiq Gani, in a statement said, “The selection of Sanwo-Olu as head of the APC Ondo State governorship campaign council cannot be for his political experience but because the APC intends to use Lagos funds to run the Ondo elections.”

The party admonished the governor to “Show empathy to Lagosians by rejecting the Greek gift selection as head of APC campaign council, so as to concentrate on his much-touted quest to improve the state’s development.”

The opposition party claimed that the state would be further plunged into avoidable debt if the governor accepted his party’s assignment.

But APC in response to the PDP statement described the choice of Sanwo-Olu to head Ondo campaign committee as “well-thought-out” as it was “based on his well-acknowledged, remarkable performance in office despite the prevailing unusual challenges.”

“He’s also known as a great manager of human and material resources. It’s laughable that you described Mr Governor as lacking political experience after successfully and effortlessly retiring your serial governorship candidate.

“However, the bad news is that the discerning general public find your bazaar like governorship primaries in Ondo and Edo states distasteful and have resolved to react accordingly with their votes,” the APC reacted through its Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo.

The party described the PDP statement as the “nauseating occasional vituperation of the opposition PDP.”

Oladejo also dismissed the allegations of PDP that the governor approved state funds for the APC governorship candidate in Edo, Pastor Osage Ize-Iyamu as “wild and reckless,” saying it had “shown the consistency of the warped state of mind of a frustrated opposition party that is determined to sell falsehood to the people.”

“The false and unfounded allegation of the intention to divert resources of Lagos State is at best an admission of what obtains in the PDP whenever there’s an election.

“Nigerians haven’t forgotten the Dasuki-gate which provided a looting spree in the name of elections,” the APC said.
