No fewer than 13 political parties have shown interest in contesting in the forthcoming by-election for Akoko Northeast/Northwest federal constituency in Ondo State.
The political parties, which include the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), National Rescue Movement (NRM) and Action Peoples Party (APP), would be fielding candidates for to fill the vacant seat of the federal constituency, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed.

The commission had scheduled the election for February 3 and one of the candidates of the political parties would replace Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, a former member of the House of Representatives on the platform of the APC, who represented the federal constituency in the National Assembly before he was appointed as Minister of Interior by President Bola Tinubu.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Oluwarotimi Babalola, who made the revelation in Akure at the weekend at a stakeholders’ meeting with leaders of the political parties, said the political parties participating in the exercise have submitted the schedule for the conduct of their primaries in compliance with Section 84 of the Electoral Act 2022.
