The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has won 16 out of the 18 local government chairmanship seats in Saturday’s council election held in the state.
The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) announced the result of the election to journalists in Akure, the state capital.
Daily Trust reports that 12 political parties fielded chairmanship candidates for the local government council exercise, marred with low turnout of voters.
However, the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), one of the political parties registered for the election, withdrew 48 hours before the exercise, citing concerns about ODIEC’s credibility in conducting the poll.
Announcing the result on Sunday, the Chairman of ODIEC, Joseph Aremo, disclosed that the APC also won in all councillorship seats in 16 of the 18 LGAs of the state.
Aremo, who served as the chief returning officer for the exercise, said the state electoral body canceled the results for Owo and Ondo West LGAs due to the ‘wrong logo’ placed for the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) on the ballot papers.
He, however, added that a rescheduled election was going on in the affected LGAs, stressing that results of the two areas would be announced after the exercise has been concluded.
