Ondo 2024: SDP chairman resigns over party’s financial burden

As political permutations begin for the 2024 governorship election in Ondo State, the Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the state, Stephen Adewale, has dumped the opposition party.

Adewale, in a letter stating his resignation from the position addressed to the party’s National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, noted that he was tired of bankrolling and taking financial obligations of the SDP in the state.

In the copy of the letter dated December 31, 2023, the SDP chairman said he was able to devote his time, talent and resources to making the party a vibrant opposition in the state, noting that it was high time for him to channel his energy to his private work and life.

“In the past year, I have been the one who has taking on the financial obligations of the party, except from Prince Adewole Adebayo, who has always been helpful whenever we called on him.

“Second, while I was able to devote all of my time, focus, talent, and resources to the party during the past year, it had an impact on my other vital daily activities. I am the Head of Station of a media company, the position I combine with the chairmanship position of SDP in Ondo State. Now, the company I work for needs my attention more than ever, and the expansion of the company has been significantly hampered by my absence.

“The third reason is that I am a writer, and had intended to write and publish two books over the course of the following 12 months. Unfortunately, since my research efforts would require a lot of travel, I would not be able to accomplish this while I am the chairman of SDP in Ondo State,” he said in the letter.

According to him, there must not be a void in the leadership of the party.

While appreciating the leadership of the party for allowing him to serve and contribute to the political space of the state, Adewale said the SDP would need “someone in the driver’s seat” who could devote their whole focus, most especially with the upcoming election of the LGA and the governorship race underway.

He also thanked political gladiators who actively participated in one of the most difficult and fiercely disputed presidential elections in Nigerian history stressing that it was a rare opportunity to work with such strong and dedicated political leaders.
