Oloyede: 410,517 candidates registered for JAMB so far

The Registrar and Chief Executive of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, Wednesday said 410,517 candidates were so far registered as of 1.00 pm on Wednesday for this years Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Oloyede said JAMB is also ready to de-register any CBT centre found culpable of illegal dealing, adding that 12, 040 have also registered for direct entry across a total of 785 CBT centres nationwide.

The JAMB boss noted that the university would never compromise admission criteria in terms of merit list, catchment areas and other considerations for any candidate. The registrar who stated this while hosting the management of the University of Ibadan in his office in Abuja on Wednesday ranked University of Ibadan as the best in terms of the admission process.

He said; “Once a candidate meets up with admission criteria such as cut-off marks and has the right Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) subject combination for the chosen course, such a student would certainly, be admitted.

He challenged any candidate not only those who have chosen the University of Ibadan (UI) but any other institution, who believes he or she meets up with admission criteria but was not offered admission and have proof, to report such to JAMB for intervention. “We will be glad to intervene,” he promised

He said the target is to register up to 60,000 candidates daily.

Meanwhile, the JAMB Registrar yesterday reiterated the resolve of the board to sanction schools charging above the stipulated N4,000 for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Oloyede who said this during his oversight visit to some Computer Based Test (CBT) centres in Lagos also warned that registration centres that charge above ₦700 will be disaccredited.

He lamented that some elite schools charge as high as N8,000 and ₦16,000 and in the process.

Oloyede disclosed that the board is partnering with EFCC and ICPC to give access to its backend so that any public university that does not comply with the laid down principles is questioned.

Commenting on NIN, he maintained that it is still mandatory for all candidates sitting for UTME.

The registrar, who also expressed concern over the wrong subjects’ combination by candidates in the process of registration, noted that it is one of the factors that may militate against them being admitted into any tertiary institution in the country despite having a high UTME score.

He warned parents to desist from over-pushing their kids as he pointed out that many of the candidates are aged 13,14 and 16 years.

Underaged candidates according to him are not biologically, psychologically and physically ready, hence this makes them fall prey to some lecturers who harass them.
