Oldest surviving SAN turns 88

Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu (SAN), a legal luminary and prolific author will on Saturday, May 23, 2020, celebrate his 88th birthday.

He is unequivocally the oldest surviving Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). SAN is a title that may be conferred on legal practitioners in Nigeria of not less than 10 years standing and who have distinguished themselves in the legal profession.

Prof. Kasunmu obtained a bachelor’s degree in law from the University College London (UCL), from where he also obtained a master’s degree in law. He was called to the Nigerian Bar 55 years ago in 1964, and he joined the Faculty of Law of the University of Ife (Obafemi Awolowo University) in the same year as one of its pioneer lecturers.

In 1971, he joined the University of Lagos as a senior lecturer and was later given the chair of Professor of Law. He served as the dean of the faculty from 1973 to 1975. In 1975, he was appointed Attorney General of Lagos State; a position he held for three years.

He was appointed SAN on January 25, 1978; that is 42 years ago. He is also a Notary Public of Nigeria.

Prof. Kasunmu is a joint author of many books and has published series of articles cutting across a spectrum of law. He has handled a number of celebrated expatriate and domestic clients at all levels of court. He also appeared and continues to appear as advocate before arbitration panels in and out of the country.
