Old boys award scholarship to students, reward teachers

The 1981-1986 set of Government Secondary School Owerri, Imo State has awarded scholarship to some deserving students of the institution. 

They also rewarded some teachers in recognition of their meritorious service to the school 

The award was for the best three students from JSS1 to SS3.

The Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, Dr. Gerald Nwakamma, said the scheme is to promote academic excellence in the school. 

He said his classmates, made up of professionals in various fields of endeavour, thought it wise to give back to the school that made them what they are today. 

He said the funding for the scholarship was through voluntary donations from members and that it would be an annual event. 

The class co-ordinator, Onyewuchi Okere, said the STAR Scholarship initiative was designed as a reward scheme to help entrench the tradition of academic excellence for which their noble alma mater is known. 

He further stated that the STAR Scholarship involved cash reward, book subsidy and mentorship. 

The overall best students from JSS1-SS2 received N20,000 each; 2nd position N15,000; while 3rd position got N10,000 each. 

The overall best student in SS3 received N75,000, 2nd position N50,000  while the 3rd position got N35,000. 

Awards were also given to two physically challenged students – Johnpaul Brenba  and Chimereze Alloy-Obinna. 

For the teachers, Constance Isiodu and Lucy Okoronkwo were awarded as best teacher in Junior and Senior Secondary schools respectively.  

The PTA  chairman of the school, Rev. Blessing Osuji, thanked the 1981 set for the award and urged the students not to abuse the opportunity. 

The Director of Finance, Secondary Education Management Board, Lady Nma Inshirim, who represented the Commissioner for Education, said the ministry was highly impressed with the great works the old boys were doing in their alma mater.
