A former presidential candidate, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has asked the Federal Government to adopt a new defence and security template to win the war against terror in the country.
Olawepo-Hashim, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in a statement on Saturday, equally asked the federal government to take action against the rising number of ISWAP fighters in some parts of Borno State as demaded by the state governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum.
Zulum had warned that Boko Haram’s menace will be “a child’s play” if the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) is allowed to grow.
Olawepo-Hashim said the Borno governor’s alarm was timely and should be swiftly acted upon by the federal government in order not to doom the nation.
“Terrorism and other threats from non-state actors are a new war which modern standing armies are not too familiar with in their training modules and general operational orders.
“The way and manner by which the forces of Taliban swept through Kabul unchallenged in Afghanistan is too fresh in our minds to make any one go to bed with two eyes closed.
Those who are fighting Nigeria are from all over the world, the enemy is multinational in its composition.
“It is time for the nation to construct a new defence and security architecture to permanently destroy the seed of terror and uproot banditry/kidnapping across the country,” he said.
He called on political leaders to put heads together in order to agree on a workable agenda to stabilise “our bleeding nation.”
