The president of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Tonobok Okowa, has expressed his excitement over the recovery of world record holder, Tobi Amusan, from sickness and impressive performance that inspired Team Nigeria’s victory in the women’s 4x400m relay at the 23rd African Athletics Championship in Douala, Cameroon.
It will be recalled that soon after arrival in Cameroon, Amusan fell ill and was unable to compete in her primary event, the 100m hurdles.
However, she recovered in time to inspire Team Nigeria women’s 4x100m Relay to win Gold at the Japoma stadium.
The victorious quartet anchored by Tobi Amusan includes Justina Eyakpobeyan, Tima Godbless and Olayinka Olajide.
An elated Okowa said, “I was really worried on my arrival in Douala. I was at the airport when I heard the news. From the airport, I rushed down to the athletes’ hotel to see her.
“Then, she was really down, and I prayed to God to come to our rescue because the children are under my custody. I am happy God answered our prayer.”
“I was so excited seeing Tobi fly on the track to give us gold. This can only come from an athlete, who is dedicated and loyal to her country. I salute her courage and sense of humour.
“I praise all the athletes and officials, who have contributed to our success story here in Douala. Our next bus stop will be in Paris for the Olympics Games, and I am optimistic that our athletes will give a good account of themselves.”
