The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi said commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators are contributing significantly to Nigeria’s economic growth and should not be banned nationwide.
Mr. Amaechi spoke yesterday at the 2017 Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle and Motocycle Owners Repairs and Riders Association of Nigeria, (ACOMORAN) conference in Abuja.
He said the banning of ‘Okada’ riders will lead to huge loss of jobs and this will affect the economy.
He however said: “There is a need to set rules and regulations that will guide the operators instead of placing a ban on the operators.”
The minister promised to engage with the Central Bank of Nigeria, commercial banks and other institutions to ensure that the association and its members get low interest loans to assist their work.
The chairman Senate Committee on Land Transport, Senator Gbenga Ashafa advised the Association to draft a bill that will protect its members and their interest for consideration at the National Assembly.
The national president, ACOMORAN, while speaking on the role of tricycles and motorcycles in tansport development, said the association has reduced unemployment across the country.
