No fewer than 102 deaths have been recorded, while 473 persons were injured in various road crashes across Ogun State between January and April this year.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in Ogun, Clement Oladele, disclosed this in a statement made available to Eko Trust on Tuesday, as the Command marked the United Nations Road Safety Week 2019.

Oladele, who disclosed that 177 accidents were recorded during the period, said most of the road crashes and injuries recorded over the past 18 months happened at road construction areas.

He listed the Abeokuta-Sagamu highway as an accident-prone spot, saying the highway accounted for 12 deaths in 16 road accidents recorded during the first quarter of the year.

Oladele said, “Motorists are hereby advised to drive cautiously at the bend adjacent the Muhammadu Buhari Estate along the highway. Three crashes that claimed three lives were recorded around the Estate during the first quarter of the year.

“Other crash-prone locations along the highway are the Kobape junction, Day Waterman junction,  Adedero and Siun. Motorists should drive carefully at these dangerous locations and not exceed 80km/hr while travelling along this highway.

“The FRSC, Ogun State Command, is also working hard to manage vehicular traffic along the Lagos-Ota-Ifo-Abeokuta expressway. The Command will continue to ensure that traffic gridlock is prevented at the stretch of the road around Iyana-Ilogbo where Julius Berger Nigeria Plc is undertaking re-construction work. The Command will also sustain its prompt response to traffic incidents such as crashes and gridlocks along this expressway.”

The Sector Commander said that since the UN Road Safety Week coincides with the West Africa Road Safety Organization (WARSO) Day scheduled for May 8, the Command has decided to evaluate and re-jig its public education and enforcement of traffic laws along major highways in the state.

He reiterated the agency’s commitment to highway safety and the implementation of UN Road Safety Resolutions.
