The management of the Gateway (ICT) Polytechnic, Sapaade, Ogun State, has shut the institution for two weeks following ceaseless armed robbery attacks on the students.

Daily Trust reports that students residing in the off-campus hostels located at Ode, Ipara and Isara, all adjoining communities to Sapaade, the host of the institution, have been under attacks which have claimed many lives.

Some female students were also raped by the hoodlums unleashing terror on the students’ communities.

One of the students told Daily Trust that the gun wielding hoodlums invaded the students’ hotels around 3am and unleashed terror on them.

The source said the attack that took place at Larufi area of Ode left one dead and nine others injured, including a landlord.

In some of the viral clips of the attack, our correspondent saw shattered doors, broken windows and walls riddled with bullets.

It was gathered that the robbers used heavy stones to break some windows to force their way into the hostels.

Our correspondent on Monday gathered that the management had announced closure of the school for two weeks following the students’ agitation.

The students had two weeks ago protested against the attacks and given government a seven-day ultimatum to address the insecurity.

The school announced the suspension of physical lectures in an internal memo, signed by the Acting Registrar of the Polytechnic, J. O Popoola.

The memo which was sighted by our correspondent read: “I have the directive of management to inform all
students in the polytechnic that all physical lectures have been suspended on campus for the next two weeks with effect from Monday, 4th December, 2023.

“In view of this development, all students are to note that online lectures have commenced with immediate effect, therefore students are directed to join online classes in order to continue lectures for the current semester.

“To this end, all students are to steer clear the polytechnic premises till physical lectures resume again at a date that will be communicated soon.”

The SUG President, Olatunji Idowu Alexander, confirmed the school closure to our correspondent on Monday.

“Yes, it’s true. There’s a memo to that effect. All lectures are to be conducted online,” he said.
