Ogun govt to sanction residents, property owners over poor sanitation

Ogun State government has warned residents and owners of properties across the state to ensure that their structures are not allowed to be overgrown with weeds, saying, anyone found wanting would be sanctioned appropriately.

A statement signed by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. BolajiOyeleye, said owners or residents of bushy properties, who refused to clear them and keep the environment clean, could be sanctioned as provided for in Section 36 of the State Environmental Management (miscellaneous) provisions Law of 2004.

He maintained that owners and residents of properties that are close to highways across the state should clear overgrown weeds on the space between their properties and the highways or such other public roads, adding that this would improve visibility and help reduce frequent road mishaps.

“The state found this measure necessary to ensure that our environment is kept clean, non-conducive for vectors and vermins to thrive and unusable as hideouts by hoodlums and criminally minded people,” he said.

While calling for support and cooperation of all and sundry, he said, “The government would not renege on its resolve and ongoing efforts at ensuring a safe and healthy environment for residents.”
