Ogun electrocution: Survivor’s father seeks assistance for ailing 3-yr-old son

Chukwuwa Victor, the father of the sole survivor of an electrocution incident that occurred on April 22 at Mowe market in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, is appealing for assistance to pay his son’s medical bills.

The incident was triggered by an electric spark in the market following the restoration of power after a rainstorm, which injured four people.

In an interview with Daily Trust, Victor recounted the tragic event, revealing that his wife, Ujunwa Chukwuma, died instantly, and his one-year-and-six-month-old baby, Onyiyechi Chukwuwa, had to undergo an amputation but died three weeks later at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba in Abeokuta.

“They informed me that my child’s hand was paralysed and needed amputation. Initially, I refused, but after three days, I consented and raised funds for the surgery. The operation was successful, and my child was gradually recovering while still on oxygen. Sadly, on May 16, my daughter passed away,” he said.

Victor said he has been financially drained since the incident, having spent N3 million on medical expenses for his deceased wife and child, and for his surviving son.

He said only the Ibadan Electricity Management Company (IBEDC) provided N200,000 in assistance.

He pleaded for financial help to ensure his son’s release from the hospital.

“I want my son, who is still in the hospital, to be discharged. The health implications are uncertain. He walks bent due to the severe injuries, and even after more than a month, his bruises are still fresh,” Victor added.
