Ogun assembly ratifies Oluomo’s sack, inaugurates new speaker

The Ogun State House of Assembly has ratified the impeachment of Olakunle Oluomo as its speaker and formally inaugurated Elemide Oludaisi as the new speaker.

Recall that 18 members of the Assembly last week signed an impeachment notice against Oluomo, but 22 out of the 26 members of the Assembly on Tuesday ratified the decision of the members.

At the plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Bolanle Ajayi, on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Ad hoc committee, Musefiu Lamidi, presented the report of the committee set up by the House on Monday to investigate the allegations leveled against Oluomo.

Lamidi noted that the committee made it clear to the former speaker that the committee was not on a witch-hunting mission but for a fair hearing on allegations leveled against him.

After Oluomo’s formal impeachment, Adegoke Adeyanju, representing Yewa North, thereafter, nominated Elemide as the new speaker and the motion was seconded by Adeniran Ademola.

Meanwhile, the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Tuesday, received members of the House of Assembly led by the newly inaugurated Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide.

Represented by his Deputy, Engr Noimot Salako-Oyedele, congratulated the legislature on the election of a new leader.

The Governor insisted that the lawmakers have the prerogative to elect a leader of their choice, saying he has no option but to back the choice they have made.

Abiodun also insisted that he did not intervene in the process that led to the emergence of the new speaker.
