Ogun Assembly finally extends tenure of embattled LG chairmen

The Ogun State House of Assembly has confirmed the tenure extension of the Transition Chairman of Remo North Local Government Area, Abiodun Somoye and his Ogun Waterside Counterpart, Femi Onanuga, few weeks after the exercise was suspended.

The assembly had, last month, extended the tenure of 18 local government chairmen, but suspended that of Somoye and Onanuga over petitions written against them from their councils.

The monarchs from Ogun Waterside, last Friday, asked the House of Assembly to remove Onanuga from office over alleged arrogance and disrespect to the traditional institution.

The monarchs described him as unfit to occupy the position owing to his “disrespect” to the monarchs, some of who he had allegedly insulted severally.

The assembly, on Tuesday, summoned Onanuga and
Somoye to defend allegations against them by their constituents.

However, the Assembly on Thursday granted the chairmen a pardon, confirming the extension of their tenure.

This followed the passage of a resolution titled: “HR. No. 084/OG/2020- Report of the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs on the confirmation of the extension of tenure of office of Local Government Transition Chairmen.”

Consequently, the Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, directed that before the resumption of the transition chairmen on Monday, 17th August 2020, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Afolabi Afuape, should immediately convey further reconciliation meeting between Onanuga and the aggrieved traditional rulers.

This, according to him, is to promote peace among stakeholders in the council.

“As much as we want to honour the governor, respect his views, support him in the administration of the State for the promotion of good governance, equity, justice, inclusiveness and his Omoluabi style of administration, we shall remain resolute in maintaining the honour and integrity of all members of the House at all time,” the Speaker said.
