Ogun Assembly confirms ‘indicted’ VC as commissioner

The Ogun State House of Assembly has confirmed the nomination of the Vice Chancellor of the state-owned Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu, as the Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology.

The assembly presided over by the Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, confirmed his nomination despite finding him indicted by the State Audit Report submitted to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the House.

The house, however, said it confirmed his nomination, relying “on the legal presumption of innocence, which states that an individual is considered innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”

The assembly also confirmed the nomination of the former president of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Waheed Odusile, as the commissioner for Information and Strategy.

The confirmation followed the commissioners-designate screening by the lawmakers on Monday.

The Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, who on Thursday presented the report of the screening at the plenary, moved a motion for its adoption which was seconded by Hon. Sylvester Abiodun.

The house considered the report of the committee and further confirmed the nomination of the duo as requested by Governor Dapo Abiodun.
