The federal government has concluded plans to commence a number of demonstration projects towards the implementation of the UNEP report for the Ogoniland cleanup.
The Minister of Environment, Amina Mohammed, said in Abuja that the Governing Council of Ogoniland Cleanup has agreed on the number of projects to embark on in February including the ground breaking for the soil management centre and some demonstration projects on the cleanup programme.
She said they would kick off the launch with the training of about 1200 women in Ogoniland on livelihoods.
“When you are planning to do things that are sustainable, you must plan to succeed, lay down government structures so that whenever you leave, the next person that comes will continue,” she said. The minister, also at the weekend, announced the appointment of Dr. Marvin Barinen Dekil as the new Project Coordinator for the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) for the implementation of UNEP report for the Ogoniland cleanup. She said the office will be put in place and fully staffed.
The minister disclosed that when they came into the office, there were a number of things that were started and that they would ensure that they completed those as well.
