Ogboinbiri FC wins Bayelsa Governor’s Cup

Ogboinbiri FC of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area have emerged champions of the 2024 Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament tagged the “Prosperity Cup”.

In the final played on Saturday at the Samson Siasia Stadium Yenagoa, Ogboinbiri FC humbled Nembe City FC 3-0 to win the sixth edition of the tournament.

Daniel Bekewei who was assisted by Bekewei Iladei put the Ogboinbiri side ahead in the 22nd minute, Iladei doubled the lead in the 29th minute from a defensive blunder by the Nembe side as he sent Ogboinbiri fans into wild celebration.

On resumption, Bekewei Iladei compounded the woes of the Nembe City FC with a solo move to make it 3-0 thereby handing victory to the Southern Ijaw side.

Earlier in the women’s final, Niger Delta University Queens beat high scoring Peremo Soccer Academy 1-0 to lift the women’s trophy.

Osiga Gloria’s scored in the second minute of the keenly contested match to give the Amassoma side the victory.

Speaking during the final, the Minister of Sports, Senator John Enoh, commended Governor Douye Diri’s commitment to sports development.

He said he had to reschedule his trip to Germany where Team Nigeria athketes are camping for the Paris Olympics just to be in Yenagoa for the final.

Enoh also lauded the governor for sustaining the tournament and, urged the next administration to continue with the competition that has become a launch pad to the development of youths in the state.

Also speaking, Governor Douye Diri, assured that his administration will continue to create the enabling environment for sports to thrive.

He said the crime rate in the state has reduced drastically as a result of the tournament that has continued to be the vehicle that has engaged the youths positively.

Commissioner for Sports Development in Bayelsa State, Dr. Daniel Igali and the Director General of the tournament, Mr Ono Akpe, also hailed the governor for ensuring that the tournament reached the sixth edition.

Meanwhile, Ogboinbiri FC received a cash prize of N5million, Nembe City got N2.5m for finishing second, Bayelsa United Feeders received N1.5m while the third runner up Kongho FC got N1m just as the quarter-finalists each received N250,000.00.

In the female category, NDU Queens received N1m, Peremo Academy took home N750,000.00, Afini Ladies who finished third got N350,000.00 as quarter-finalists got consolatory prize of N100,000.00 each.

There were also cash prizes for winners in the Para-Soccer event.
