Officers feared dead as gunmen shoot police, customs in Enugu

Law enforcement officers are feared dead as armed men on Thursday afternoon shot police and customs personnel on duty at different locations in Enugu State.

It was learnt that the armed outlaws attacked a customs’ checkpoint within Ozalla community along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, close to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Iituku-Ozalla at about 1:30 pm.

According to an eyewitness account, the gunmen opened fire on the unsuspecting customs officers, leaving one dead instantly and injuring three others.

The eyewitness said, “I saw one of the customs officers motionless; while three others were in serious pain as they were helped by some Good Samaritans down to the UNTH hospital close-by.”

It was also gathered that during the incident at Lomalinda area of Ugwuaji Road, the gunmen shot at policemen on stop-and-search duty leaving two officers feared dead instantly and about four others sustaining deadly bullet wounds.

Daily Trust gathered that the incident, which occurred about 2 pm, left the Ugwuaji Road deserted by vehicular traffic for up to two hours.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu State, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, who confirmed the incident said that the  “information surrounding the incident is sketchy.”

Ndukwe said: “Meanwhile, a manhunt of the hoodlums has been initiated. Further development will be communicated, please.”
